Another advantage of visiting Vegas for the first time are the number of other famous tourist destinations that you can look to combine as part of the same trip. Most notably on the list would be the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam which are both accessible from your base in Vegas.
If
you’re wanting to spread your wings a little further, a trip to
Vegas can also be easily combined with a stop in a Californian city
(San Francisco, LA, San Diego), or if you’re after a little more
adventure, then California and Vegas are also great places to visit
as part of a fly-drive.
If you are planning to combine a trip to Vegas as part of a fly-drive, my only advice would be to make sure that you consider the distances involved in driving between stop-over points. For example, an itinerary may read; 1 night in Monterey, 1 night in Yosemite National Park, 2 nights in San Francisco – “great” you may think, “look at all these places we’re going to get to visit”. However, if you spend the best part of a day driving from Monterey to Yosemite before needing to spend another 4 hours driving from Yosemite to San Francisco the following day, that doesn’t leave much time for exploring Yosemite which definitely deserves a full day at least.
Another useful tip I would offer from my experience of doing a California/Vegas fly-drive - Vegas is situated in the desert not particularly close to any other notable stop-off destination. This usually results in pre-set itineraries where you can be left with a long drive through Death Valley. Rather than do this, it may be advisable to arrange to leave the car in San Francisco and to get an internal flight to Vegas (flights taking around 1.5 hours). For anyone considering a fly-drive option, I would, however, definitely recommend you include the drive between Santa Barbara and Monterey along Coastal Highway 1 which contains some spectacular scenery.
